Circulating banknotes

In 1997 the Magyar Nemzeti Bank /Central Bank of Hungary/ started to issue a new series of forint banknotes. The old notes issued from 1946 were replaced by the new series throughout the next few years.
The front of each banknote bears the portraits of outstanding politicians of Hungarian history, on the back there are related historical scenes. The composition of the new banknotes has been upgraded and, by virtue of their equal sizes (154 x 70 mm) they bear a close resemblance to modern European banknotes, which have preserved their traditions. Every denomination is printed on new banknote-paper, containing watermark, security thread and fibres, by using advanced technology and a number of safeguards.
The 1000 forint note was recalled from circulation, and replaced by a new version with a copper coloured holographic metal stripe at 10 April 2006, while graphic and other elements remained unchanged. The 200 forint denomination was withdrawn from circulation at 16 November 2009. Since 9 September 2008 the 10000 forint note has been printed with yellow circles, to improve protection against photocopying. All other denomations have these yellow circles from 15 April, 2009.
The series of the actually circulating banknotes has been enlarged by the issue of the 2000 forint commemorative banknote (in year 2000, to the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of the Hungarian state) and in 2006 by the commemorative version of the circulating 500 forint note devoted to the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and war of independence. Both are different to the usually circulating ones with the same face value, issued in a remarkably lower issue limit.
