Like many other central banks around the world, the Magyar Nemzeti Bank /Central Bank of Hungary/ issues coins commemorating important dates and outstanding figures in Hungarian history and culture, highlighting important sporting events, supporting environmental protection activities of national and international organisations and commemorating key event.
The first Hungarian forint collector coin was issued in 1948, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1848-49 revolution and war of independence. The bank established a regular schedule for launching such coins, which are primarily designed for numismatic purposes.
Coins and banknotes always reflect the artistic and sculptural trends of the period in which they are issued. This is particularly true for collector coins, as they highlight the event itself. Consequently, it is desirable to strive for high aesthetic standards, which is why collector coins are designed by renowned coin designers and artists.
Most of the Hungarian collector coins are produced in two different quality, either in brilliant uncirculated (BU) or in proof (mat reliefs on mirror finished surface).
Gold collector coins are mostly struck in proof, or at least proof-like quality.Usually the most important events and anniversaries are commemorated by gold coins, this is why there are no gold coins issued every year. Gold coins can diversify the tools for investments, having limited mintages, beside of their gold content (even fine gold coins can be found among them).
