In 1993, the National Bank of Hungary issued a series of new forint coins for circulation using modern materials, giving the coins uniform appearance. The obverse of these coins bears the legend MAGYAR KÖZTÁRSASÁG (Republic of Hungary) and the coat of arms of the republic or the image of a protected Hungarian indigenous plant or animal, alternating with the denominations. The reverse of the coins shows the denomination. The 100 forint from this series was replaced at 21 October 1996, when a ferrous-based bicolor (brass-plated core and nickel-plated ring) coin appeared. The halfsilver 200 forint coins were recalled in 1998, while the 1 and 2 forint denominations in 2008. From 15 June 2009 a new 200 forint bimetal&bicolor (ring struck of CuNiZn, core of CuNi) coin became the highest face value of our small change. According to the new Constitution (Basic Law) of Hungary, from 1st January 2012 the coins are struck with new legend MAGYARORSZÁG (Hungary), other design elements remained unchanged. Valid coins with old legend however, remained legal tenders.
Coin sets contain all denominations minted with the yeardate of a certain year being legal tenders of that period. First the National Bank produced PE-packed coin sets, which contained the old forint series, already sold out. Since 1992, the coins for mintsets are are struck by the Hungarian Mint Ltd. either in extra uncirculated or in proof versions. From 1993 the coins are packed into spectacular blister packaging with cardboard folders, yearly devoted to a specific event or actuality. Between 1993-2002 the extra BU quality was limited in 7,000 pieces, while the proof one in 3,000 pieces. From 2003 the maximum mintage for the BU quality has grew up to 8,000 pieces, that of the proof ones to 7,000 pieces. Since 2006, the mintage is divided into several topics: beside the normal mintsets which contain only circulation coins, other sets including an extra coin or medal for a special theme appeared. For new born babies, baby sets with a pop-out special baby medal is also available in several yeardates.
Circulation coins are sold by the Hungarian Mint only and exclusively in the form of the official coin sets, or in so called "first day mint" packages, which contain commerative coins struck on the first day when production started.
Beside of mintsets, other packages with coins or medals (i.e. bookmarks, bankcard-pack, family gifts in packaging, etc.) are also available in this product line.
